Habitat and landscape improvements - an conservation priority

Baulker LaneV1.  Action to control the fly tipping at Baulker Lane(photo on the left).

V2.  Environmental improvements to bottom Baulker Lane.

V3.  Extension to Vicar Water Country Park at the bottom of the pit site.

V4.  Action to protect and enhance the remaining heathland/acid grassland.

V5.  Action to reconnect the fragmented parts of Sherwood Forest by habitat management schemes between the Dog & Duck and Archway House.

                                                      V6.  Encourage the planting of hedgerow trees - particularly oaks.

                                                      V7.  Introduction of grazing animals to keep rough grassland scrub free.

                                                      V8.  Preparation of a conservation plan for the Maun and Vicar Water Valleys.

Access Routes - walking, cycling, horseback

A1.  Linking footpath/cycle route from Kings Clipstone to Sherwood Pines

              a   route A (along B6030 to Sherwood Pines Entrance)

              b   route B (along Forestry Holdings Road)

A2.   Safe footway for pedestrians through the village.

A3.   Bridleway link past the palace site to join the Maun Valley(School Lane) to national cycle route.

A4.   A cycle route along the B6030 between Kings Clipstone & Clipstone Village.

 

King John's Palace - the Kings Houses - a heritage priority

P1.   Repairs to the foundations to avert the imminent collapse of the ruin.

P2.   Action to stabilise the rest of the structure.

P3.   Further archaeological investigation of the site.

P4.   Interpretative display explaining the layout and history of the site.

 

Limiting the number of cars in the village - no new car-parks

C1.  Visitor activities should be environmentally friendly and sustainable.

C2.  Visitors should be given every encouragement to get out of their cars to enjoy the forest.

C3.   It is reasonable to expect visitors to park and walk or cycle to the village from

           a   South -Vicar Water Country Park

           b   East - Sherwood Pines Country Park

           d   North - Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre – Edwinstowe

           c   West - Sherwood Forest Farm Park - Maun Valley

 

The Dog and Duck Meadow - a joint environmental and historical priority


M1.  Viewing point on the embankment with interpretation boards for

            a  The Water Meadows system as a whole.

            b  Specifically on Dog & Duck meadow and the Great Pond.

            c  The Palace and the village.

M2.  Path across meadow to the track at the top leading past the important features.

M3.  Excavation of dyke at top of the field.

M4.  Restoration of channels and control sluice (if found in the dyke).

M5.  Restoration of surface panes.

M6.  Hedge laying and fencing to allow grazing with sheep to keep the grass as a meadow.

M7.  Resurfacing of the access track at the top of the meadow.

M8.  Restoration of water supply to allow meadow to be ‘floated’.

M9.  The formation of pond/wetland area at bottom of the slope.

 

Heritage-Community Centre - a possible long term goal

note this is floated as an idea - the implications in terms of car parking and traffic would have to be carefully examined to ensure the benefits clearly outweighed disadvantages.

H1.   The sites would benefit from a heritage centre.

H2.   Such a facility must include community use.

H3.   Such a facility should include a tearoom.

H4.   Such a facility should include business premises.

H5.   Sites worth investigating further.
