The archaeologist involved has concluded that the remains are much older than previously thought. The Romanesque building style is very similar to number of west country church buildings built in the late 12th century.
The conclusion to the report was that the Palace was in a dreadful state. There is widespread damage to the walls at ground level with major salt damage and cavitation. Basically the lower stones have been attacked by chemicals in the ground and air and have suffered major erosion resulting in dangerous overhangs. Higher up various overhangs and cavities have developed as the mortar crumbles.
