The economic benefits - getting the best out of the changes
How the right sort of changes will bring economic gains.
Getting visitors to Sherwood Forest to stay overnight.
A very high proportion of visitors to Sherwood Forest come for the day, travelling from the surrounding urban areas. They visit the local attractions in their cars, most never getting out and experiencing the tranquility and beauty of the forest. These visitors often contribute little to the local economy.
The local businesses would benefit far more if more of the visitors who came were interested in experiencing all that the forest has to offer. Sherwood Forest could quite easily become one of the top places in the country for people who want to walk, cycle and ride horses, attracting visitors who want to stay for a number of days. Think New Forest or Forest of Dean.
The County council are working on a strategy to change the way visitors view Sherwood. We want to excercise as much influence as possible and push this process in the direction that brings most benefit to local residents.
Key concept – Exploring the area on foot, cycle & horseback.
- Environmentally friendly activities that also promote good health & well being.
- Encouraging visitors to come and stay rather than just visiting for the day.
- Protecting the essential character of the Forest by having a ring of entry car-parks to keep the cars at bay.
