route 5 (5 miles)
Roaming the royal heart of ancient Sherwood Forest - suitable for walkers and cyclists
A circular route of about 5 miles along Archway Road to Edwinstowe, Birklands and returning to the village down Green Ride and Archway Road.
Start on Archway Road

1. The route follows Archway Road north. The signal box is worth stopping to look at.
2. At Forge Bridge cross the River Maun, turn right and follow the path towards Edwinstowe.
3. This part of the Maun was straightened about 1830 as part of the Flood Dyke irrigation scheme, The old course can be seen on the left.
4. In the small wood the river flows very rapidly through an artificial channel cut as part of the 1830 scheme. The old course of the river can be seen on the other side of the river at this point.
5. After passing through the small wood the path emerges with a field on the right. At the top of the field turn right, there is a fragment of the flood dyke to cross, then the River Maun.
6. The path follows the Maun until Mill Lane is reached. Continue towards Edwinstowe until High Street is reached, then turn left back over the Maun.
7. Walkers can pass up the Church Street but cyclists have either to dismount or go round by East Lane or West Lane.
8. Cross the road at the traffic lights and continue north past the church. Turn left just before the cricket pitch.
9. Take the path which goes to the back of the open grassland furthest from the road, this leads to the Gleadthorpe bridleway. Follow the bridleway signs until a track branches to the left. Take this track along the edge of the forest. You will pass a group of very old oaks to your right.
10. This track curves slowly until it reaches The Green Ride (it’s easy to identify from the name) which crosses at right angles. Turn left and follow the Ride down hill, near A6075 it veers right. Cross the road and take the lane through the wood.
11. Archway Lodge will be on the left as you emerge from the wood. The niches contain various folk-law figures. The track then reaches Forge Bridge and returns along Archway Road.
