Life happens, and sometimes that means damage to your prized synthetic rattan furniture. If something happens to scratch the strands on your beautiful outdoor piece, don’t despair – most damage can be repaired at home with no need for a specialist or any expensive tools.

What you’ll need:

Repairing scratches in synthetic rattan furniture isn’t difficult, but it does require some specialised materials. There are two methods to choose from, and we have included both below.

Method 1: The Hairdryer Method

This method is best for minor scratches and scrapes.

For this method, you will need:

  • A Hairdryer
  • A soft cloth

The method itself is very simple. Use the hairdryer to heat up the rattan where it is scratched. Heat it slowly, starting in a wider area and then intensifying it toward the point of the scratch itself. The rattan material will begin to soften under the heat. With the (dry) cloth, rub and buff the scratch out with a vigorous motion. The scratch should fade and disappear.

Method 2: The Epoxy Resin and Paint Method

This method is best for deep scratches or even breaks.

For this method, you will need:

  • Some epoxy resin
  • A sculpting tool (a popsicle stick, toothpick or similar will do)
  • Some paint that matches the colour of the rattan

In a well-ventilated area, preferably outside, fill in the gouges or scrapes with the epoxy resin. Smooth and guide the epoxy into place using the sculpting tool. Let dry for 24 hours. Use the paint (or varnish) to match the colour of the epoxy to the colour of the existing rattan.
